Maria and Alexander Koppitsch

Alex and Maria Koppitsch took over their family winery in 2011. Before that it had been run by Alex’s Dad Leo, and before that, well, the Koppitsch family has been making wine for over 500 years. Let’s just say that Alex and Maria had a clear vision in mind, to share their passion for natural wine in order to make natural wine. Their vineyards surround the beautiful Neusiedlersee lake in the wine region of Burgenland in east Austria. Some parcels are limestone, some sandy, some gravel, some clay. The Koppitsch family has been making wine for over 500 years, but it was 2011 when Alex and Maria took over and really started pushing the Rudolf Steiner vibes forward. Alex is always in the vineyard and 6 hectares of land, he does most of the fieldwork with help from his dad Leo. Maria takes care of the communication and advertising. They also have three kids, as if running a natural winery wasn’t enough already. For the first 10 years they toured the globe like an arena rock band, to share their wine and philosophy. Their work paid off and they are now represented by some of the best natural wine importers from Japan to Montreal. In 2020 they announced to all their importers that they would stop travelling abroad, mainly due to the ecological footprint but also so Alex and Maria can focus even more on the vineyard and cellar. They recently switched to unprinted, recycled cardboard boxes that close without tape and also use lightweight bottles to reduce CO2 emissions during transport.
